Dec 07, Kelly Nossiter rated it it was amazing. I don't often review books, but A Dark Tyranny really deserves a good review. This first book, in what will undoubtedly be a masterful series, drops the reader into a fantasy world that is so clear that you can almost touch, taste and feel it.

The author begins by introducing several characters that quickly find themselves struggling to survive as darkness begins to overtake the world of man. Each character is on their own path, but their stories intertwine and ultimately collide as they face th I don't often review books, but A Dark Tyranny really deserves a good review. This epic adventure was heart-pounding, and utterly addictive. I absolutely recommend this book!! This is a thoroughly entertaining debut novel. I was engrossed from start to finish. Typical readers will appreciate A Dark Tyranny for its richly i This is a thoroughly entertaining debut novel. Typical readers will appreciate A Dark Tyranny for its richly imagined personal stories, heartbreaking drama, and chest-pounding battle scenes, played out underneath darkening skies.

There are several interwoven storylines, each compelling; but I suspect different readers will be drawn more deeply into the lives of different characters. I certainly have a couple of favorite characters, but won't introduce a spoiler. And, while this first book focuses on the rising powers of the Gorgon armies, we are also witness to a mysterious providential force drawing together an army of Acolytes to stand against the darkness.

I have noticed a review or two that suggest this book may not be for all readers. For me and, I suspect, for many, the author's style is perfectly suited for the subject matter he has chosen to present. Bring on Book 2! Nov 27, Rhonda Thompson rated it it was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed A Dark Tyranny and was immediately pulled into the world of Altaris and its characters. I felt transported to an ancient, mythical land with non stop action, and intriguing characters. I would highly recommend this book, and cannot wait for the next one. Jan 07, Corey Watts rated it really liked it. Great story and ideas, I would personally prefer more detail and world building when starting a new epic fantasy series but aside from that it was an excellent quick read.

Oct 02, Brian Madigan rated it really liked it. Clearly setting up the next book - as such the ending was somewhat predictable. Mar 05, Iain D Jeffery rated it did not like it. Heavy going I just couldn't get into this book and I'm an avid fantasy reader.

The writing style kept jarring me out of any type of connection with the characters, it was very stilted with short sentences and an almost factual feel that made it hard to immerse myself. This read as if the book had not been edited at all, if you are a future purchaser I'd recommend you save your money and look elsewhere.

Feb 16, Sharon rated it really liked it. It falls in the genre of fantasy. Enter the world where Gorgons, a Nighteye and Acolytes exist. To the humans they are of myth and storytelling of time past. But no, they are real and ready to fight the world they live in, some together against a common cause which happens to be a king. One that not beloved by all.

The king is not popular, people are willing to go to war to invade the kingdom. Even his own brother is on the other side. A brother who is referred to as the devil due to his lack of color.

Meet the Acolytes, Matthias and Luras. One has accepted his fate, the other has not. They have been chosen by a greater power to help fight in the battle of good versus evil. Meet a young slave Finn whose love for a young woman of nobility knows no bounds as he tracks across the land to save her from the people who has taken the young woman captive.

Armies versus armies.

Good versus evil. Who will win and at what cost? I am normally a reader who have some problems when the list of characters is longer than normal. There are a lot of names tossed in this book. Yet I had no problem remembering who was who. I attached myself to one of the heroes in the book, and when I was getting to the end and it appeared that he might die, I became upset with the author.

I was taken with the character and that only happened due to how the author wrote him in this novel. A good pick up in my opinion. And for someone who does not read fantasy as a norm to me this is a thumbs up. Jan 05, Jojo Almario rated it liked it.

Harry Potter - "Light and Darkness"

This book does a good job of presenting the beginning of a very enthralling fantasy epic tale. As with other fantasy genre books, all I ever look for is to be entertained, and lose myself in the story. A Dark Tyranny does a pretty good job at that. The mood of the book stays very heavy and pressing with a few smatterings of hope and humor, but that can be enjoyable in a way. It definitely makes me look forward to other books that are coming from this series. Only a few complaints, and they didn't This book does a good job of presenting the beginning of a very enthralling fantasy epic tale.

Only a few complaints, and they didn't really take away from the over all enjoyment of the tale. Pendleton almost seems to write in a "Hemingway-esque-short-sentence" manner. Some might find this off putting, but to his credit, during sometimes, it helped set the grim mood in parts of the story.

There was one section where perspective was switched to an antagonist, but that didn't seem to be repeated. I think I would have liked the villains Fire-Hain, I think they were foreshadowed more, but something tells me that the existing fore-shadowing about Mathias is where I should be putting my attention.
